“MORNING” marks the directorial debut of Lala Jiang, an emerging Chinese filmmaker. This character-driven documentary is set in and around a Cantonese restaurant’s back kitchen in Canada, where we follow Peng, the main character, a Dim Sum chef. The film paints a vivid picture of the challenges faced by new Chinese immigrants trying to make a living in a new land with limited opportunities. By using one-take handheld techniques throughout the film, “MORNING” offers an intimate glimpse into the character’s daily life, capturing their natural reactions, movements, events, and emotions.
